Setup
A GSM modem always needs a SIM card. The SIM card is a physical chip card that contains your subscriber ID with your SMS provider.
When the SIM card is in place you need to connect the GSM modem to your server. There are a great number of ways to establish this connection. We prefer these options:
COM using a serial to USB adapter
This is a great setup on your development system or for a small shop. The advantage is low cost and quick to setup. The disadvantage is that you need the GSM device to be fairly close to your server. This can cause bad GSM reception if your server is in a large server room deep inside a building. If that is the case please have a look at the Ethernet option.

Ethernet using serial to Ethernet
This setup is a little bit more expensive and a little bit more involved to setup. But this setup has one big advantage: You can setup your GSM modem anywhere in the company. Preferably somewhere near a window that looks outside.

In this example use the Moxa NPort serial to Ethernet adapter. An alternative is to use the DigiOne serial to Ethernet adapter
